The equipment mounted in the hazardous area must first be approved for use in an intrinsically safe system. The barriers designed to protect the system must be mounted outside of the hazardous area (as shown above) in an area designated as Non-hazardous or safe . Whenever equipment is being installed in an area where combustible material is present it is essential to take steps to minimize the risk of ignition. OHSA accepts IS design as an appropriate approach, although requires that the whole system be designed accordingly. It is not sufficient to just use .
Terminals 1 and 2 are connected to the intrinsically safe circuits in the hazardous area. If they are used in the hazardous area, active intrinsically safe apparatus must be certificated unless the electrical values of such apparatus do not exceed any of the following values: V; A; 25 mW. INTRINSICALLY SAFE SYSTEM: An assembly of interconnected intrinsically safe apparatus, associated apparatus, and interconnecting cables, in which those parts of the system which may be used in hazardous (classified) locations are intrinsically safe circuits. The main points to focus on are.
for the Approval or Evaluation of Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus per 30 CFR Part 18 (ASAP) The following Power Point ® presentations were produced for the recent IS Workshop held J , at the Approval & Ceritification Center. They are for downloading and viewing on your computer. This module allows existing Intrinsically Safe equipment with an RS/RS or RS/TTL port to connect ET/ETG and MTL BxLAN-OEM The unique ET/ETG IS interface provides connectivity between non-IS and IS Ethernet networks.

• Standards agencies around the world harmonize activity so that intrinsically safe equipment manufactured in one country eventually might be approved for use in another without expensive testing and documentation.
7 8. Intrinsic Safe Design Considerations There are three components, and all three together make a field device intrinsic safety.
Typical intrinsically safe system Figure illustrates a typical intrinsically safe (IS) system where the safe performance of each piece of apparatus is dependent on the integrity of all the equipment in the system.
For example, the safety of the Temperature Transmitter (Tx) depends upon the amount of energy supplied by the IS Interface. An intrinsically safe power supply is designed for LED based lighting system to be used in underground coal mines and values of components used.

Diode safety barriers Underground coal mines worldwide often face significant operational risks due to the presence of unmapped or inaccurately mapped abandoned workings. Generally, these workings are below the water table and are flooded under high pressure.
Present longwall or room-and-pillar operations may inadvertently breach the barrier into flooded abandoned workings and produce disastrous consequences.
Intrinsically safe equipment is defined as "equipment and wiring which is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy under normal or abnormal conditions to cause ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignited concentration.".
Simple electrical apparatus used within an intrinsically safe circuit. Simple apparatus Simple apparatus must possess the following characteristics: no internal cells or batteries (exception: thermocouples, photocells, etc., limited to V, mA and 25 mW) connection to a single source only no internal voltage/current transformation.
Equipment for Class I Hazardous Locations The key to installing electrical equipment in any hazardous location is to prevent the ignition of its surrounding flammable ical equipment installed in hazardous locations must be of a type designed to prevent the ignition of a flammable atmosphere, propagation of fire, or creation of an explosion.
Coal mines usually also require intrinsically safe equipment due to the potentially explosive atmospheres. magnitude range: − to + frequency range: 4– Hz. sensors: and 14 Hz geophones; retrievable/movable sensors. communications: underground, therefore DSL/fiber.

This is the basic principle of intrinsic safety As the name implies, intrinsic safety refers to equipment and wiring that’s inherently safe In other words, an intrinsically safe system is one with energy levels so low they cannot cause an explosion Intrinsic safety is a concept that was born in the mining industry in the early 19th century.
Intrinsic Safety Circuit Design Intrinsic safety training for ‘product’ designers. This 2 day introduction to Intrinsic Safety Circuit Design course is ideal for Engineers who wish to start designing intrinsically safe equipment or brush up on their knowledge of this complicated subject and perhaps learn some new methods of achieving safety.
The presenter has conducted or checked hundreds. Abstract: Intrinsic safety is a mature proven method to achieve a safe installation of electrical apparatus in a location made hazardous by the presence of flammable or combustible materials.
Standards for intrinsically safe apparatus are still evolving. Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. Standard and NFPA are the most complete statement of requirements for intrinsically safe.
Figure typical grounded and ungrounded two wire intrinsically safe circuits. Figure illustrates the principle that every ungrounded conductor entering the Division 1/Zone 0, or 1 location in this case where the transmitter or transducer is located, must be protected against unsafe voltage and current by appropriate associated apparatus.
g) only double protected or intrinsically safe type Ex ia explosion protected apparatus remains energized where flammable gas is present in concentrations in excess of % by volume in the air. All other explosion protected apparatus must be de-energized at flammable gas concentrations in excess of % by volume in air.
In order to accomplish the post disaster surveillance without any difficulties in the harsh environments, it is very much crucial for the mine rescue equipment to function reliably.
The first and foremost design requirement of any rescue robot to be deployed in underground coal mines is that it has to be intrinsically safe and flame proof.
The purpose of I.S calculation is to ensure that a selected combination of intrinsically safe apparatus, associated apparatus, and interconnecting cables are forming an Intrinsically safe loop that can be used in the hazardous area.
